Original Yacht Paintings
Original paintings of racing yachts, classic yachts and memorable moments at sea
These are paintings of yachts doing what they were built for. Some are classics: HMY Britannia racing Valkyrie II in the Solent in 1893, Jolie Brise, Bloodhound racing round the Isle of Wight. Some are modern: Britannia, the British America's Cup boat of 2024, Fairy Huntsman, Diablo, Mandamus, and Morning After, the S&S 34 I race myself.
What links them is the moment. A yacht under load looks different from a yacht at anchor. She heels, she sits down on her lines, the leeward rail goes under and the sails take a shape no photograph quite holds still. After fifty-five years of offshore racing, 14 Fastnets among them, I know when a sail is drawing and when a boat is overpressed. That is what I paint: the yacht as her crew saw her from the rail, not as a naval architect drew her.
Each one is painted in oils in my studio in Cowes.
If your own yacht belongs on this wall, I paint commissions from the owner's photographs and the story behind the boat: a race won, a long passage, a family's summers. Commissions start at £850 for a 40 x 50 cm canvas. See how a commission works.
