Lighthouse Paintings
Paintings and prints of some of Britain and Ireland’s most distinctive lighthouses
For an offshore sailor a lighthouse is not scenery. It is a mark of the course, a check on the navigation and, at three in the morning, the first proof that the plan is working. After 14 Fastnet races, the Fastnet is the lighthouse I paint most.
This collection follows the lights of the south and west: the Needles and Hurst Castle at either end of the western Solent, Anvil Point, Portland Bill, Start Point, the Eddystone, the Lizard, Wolf Rock, Longships and the Bishop Rock, out to the Fastnet off south west Ireland, and Les Casquets off Alderney. Most of them stand beside the course of the Fastnet Race, and I have seen most of them from the deck of a racing yacht.
The paintings try to keep that view: the light breaking through cloud, the sea against the rock, the scale of a tower against open water.
Original paintings and prints are available. If a particular lighthouse matters to you, as a race rounded, a landfall or a passage, I can paint it as a commission. See how a commission works.
