Not every painting needs a yacht in it. These are the places around the boats: the Isle of Wight coast, the Solent and the water that ties them together, painted in oils in the studio in Cowes.

Some are views any Islander will know: Tennyson Down looking east from the Needles lighthouse, the Gurnard navigation buoy looking west, the west dry dock on the Medina River.

The same rule applies as with the yachts. The light and the sea have to be right, because they are what a sailor reads first. A flat calm, a building sea, a front coming through: each changes the colour of the water and the shape of the sky, and I would rather paint that change than a postcard.
